How to Use Pure Compost

Adding compost to your garden can improve your plants' growth and overall health, as compost contains vital nutrients (like nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorous) needed for plants. It is not recommended that you grow plants in pure compost without the addition of soil.

Now that you have compost, either from this event or some that you've made in your backyard compost, how do you use it?

Ratios (all sourced from this article)

  • Potted plants: 20 to 50% compost to soil blend

  • Vegetable gardens: 1" of compost to every 5" of soil, you can measure this using the depth of your shovel's blade

  • Flower gardens: 20% compost to soil blend

  • New trees and shrubbery: 10% compost to soil blend

  • Established trees and shrubbery: 1/4 to 1/2" of compost around the base of the tree

  • Established lawns: 1/8 to 1/4" of compost, rake it into the grass

  • Seeding new lawns: 1 to 2 1/2" of compost, till into the top 6" of soil

To measure out the ratio of soil to compost, use a bucket or a shovel as a measure of volume. For example, a 1:5 ratio of compost to soil would be one bucket of compost to 5 buckets of soil.
